Learning notes
Explanation
The core idea is that something is firmly established and leaves little or no room for doubt. When it describes a situation or noun, it means “certain,” “definite,” or “settled.” After a verb or clause, it strengthens the statement with the sense of “definitely” or “for sure.” Used by itself in a reply, it means “of course.” The negative form ไม่แน่นอน is especially common. Depending on context, it can mean “uncertain,” “not finalized,” “unpredictable,” or “unstable.” ยังไม่แน่นอน often means that something has not been decided yet or is not yet known. แน่นอน is standard in both conversation and writing. Add ครับ or ค่ะ for a polite affirmative response.
Usage
It is common when discussing whether plans or dates are settled, expressing confidence in a fact or prediction, and promising that you will do something. It also frequently appears as “of course” when accepting an invitation or request. The word is natural in both everyday conversation and workplace planning.
Caution
The scope of ไม่ can sometimes make a sentence ambiguous. For example, ฉันไม่ไปแน่นอน may be understood as either “I’m definitely not going” or “It isn’t certain that I’m going,” depending on context. Use ฉันไม่ไปอย่างแน่นอน for an unambiguous “I’m definitely not going,” and ยังไม่แน่ใจว่าจะไปไหม when you mean “I’m not sure yet whether I’ll go.”
