Explanation

สุดท้าย combines สุด, which conveys an extreme or endpoint, with ท้าย, meaning the rear or end. Its core image is therefore “the very last point.” When modifying a noun, it follows that noun: คนสุดท้าย means “the last person,” and วันสุดท้าย means “the last day.” As an adverb, it often introduces the outcome of earlier events. The pattern สุดท้าย…ก็… is especially common when saying what eventually happened. สุดท้ายนี้ is a standard expression used to introduce a closing point or thanks at the end of a speech or written message. The word itself is neutral and works naturally in both conversation and writing.

Usage

Use it for the last person in line, a final day, the last train, or the final opportunity. It is also very common when describing what happened after a series of attempts, discussions, or events. In presentations and formal remarks, สุดท้ายนี้ introduces a closing point or expression of thanks.

Caution

When it modifies a noun, place it after the noun, as in คนสุดท้าย. Do not normally use it to mean “latest” or “most recent”; use ล่าสุด instead. ข่าวล่าสุด means “the latest news,” whereas ข่าวสุดท้าย would mean “the last or final news item” in an appropriate context.
