Explanation
สายตา is formed from สาย, “line,” and ตา, “eye.” Thinking of it as a line extending from the eyes helps connect its different uses. It can describe the eyes’ ability to see, a gaze directed toward something, the area that remains visible, or—figuratively—the way someone perceives and judges a person or situation. Its meaning is often made clear by the surrounding expression, as in สายตาดี (“have good eyesight”), สบสายตา (“make eye contact”), หายไปจากสายตา (“disappear from sight”), and ในสายตา… (“in the eyes of…”).
Usage
It is common in conversations about eyesight at clinics or optical shops, when describing eye contact and facial expressions, and when keeping someone under watch. The pattern ในสายตา + person or group is also widely used for personal impressions, public perception, and brand or corporate image.
Caution
Use ตา for the eye as a body part: “My eye hurts” is เจ็บตา, not normally เจ็บสายตา. Also, สายตายาว technically means farsightedness, but in everyday conversation it may refer specifically to age-related difficulty focusing on nearby objects.
