หน

Explanation

หน has two central ideas: a point in time viewed as an occasion, and a point or course in space viewed as a way, direction, or place. In its time-related use, it can be a noun referring to a particular occasion, as in หนนี้ (“this time”), or a classifier counting occurrences, as in สองหน (“twice”). In everyday modern Thai, however, ครั้ง is more common for counting occurrences. Its spatial meaning is most useful to learners in compounds and fixed expressions, including หนทาง (“way; means”), แห่งหน (“place”), and ทุกหนทุกแห่ง (“everywhere”). หนทาง may describe either a physical path or an abstract means of solving or achieving something.

Usage

It appears in narratives, essays, songs, and sometimes conversation when referring to a particular occasion or counting how many times something happened. ครั้ง is more usual for the latter in everyday speech. The spatial sense commonly appears in หนทาง when discussing a route or a possible means of solving a problem, and in fixed expressions such as ทุกหนทุกแห่ง (“everywhere”).

Caution

For an everyday “where?” use ที่ไหน, and for “which way?” use ทางไหน; หนไหน is not the usual neutral choice. Also note the grammatical difference between noun uses such as หนนี้ and classifier uses such as สองหน.
