Explanation

นอกจาก is built from นอก (“outside”) and จาก (“from”). Its basic image is looking beyond or outside a reference point. This produces two related uses: exclusion (“except for A”) and addition (“besides A”). Negative expressions often signal exclusion, while words such as ด้วย, อีก, and ยัง commonly signal addition. A particularly useful pattern is “นอกจาก A แล้ว ยัง B ด้วย,” meaning “not only A but also B.” It is common in both conversation and writing. When A is a full clause, จะ may appear after its subject, as in นอกจากฝนจะตกแล้ว.

Usage

It is widely used to identify an exception within a group or to add information beyond something already mentioned. Common situations include asking what else is available, limiting what someone eats or does, and describing multiple skills or qualities.

Caution

นอกจาก A can be ambiguous between “except for A” and “in addition to A.” Use ยกเว้น when explicit exclusion is needed, and use ด้วย, อีก, or the full pattern “นอกจาก A แล้ว ยัง B ด้วย” to make addition clear.
