A basic pattern is “general group or statement + ยกเว้น + exception.” For example, ทุกวันยกเว้นวันจันทร์ means “every day except Monday.” When a full clause follows, ยกเว้นว่า is commonly used to introduce an exceptional condition. As a verb, ยกเว้น can take fees, taxes, duties, or people as its object and mean “exempt,” “exclude,” or “waive.” ได้รับการยกเว้น means “be exempt” or “receive an exemption,” while ข้อยกเว้น means “exception.”

Usage

In everyday conversation, it is used to identify exceptions such as food someone does not eat, a person who is not participating, or a day when a store is closed.
