Explanation

The central idea of กึ่ง is “half” or “between two things.” Rather than standing alone to express a quantity, it commonly combines with another word, as in กึ่งทาง “halfway,” กึ่งกลาง “midpoint,” and กึ่งสำเร็จรูป “partially prepared” or “semi-finished.” The pattern กึ่ง A กึ่ง B describes something that has features of both A and B without being entirely either one. For example, กึ่งเล่นกึ่งจริง means “half-joking, half-serious,” while กึ่งหลับกึ่งตื่น means “half asleep, half awake.” It is common in explanatory writing, news, and product classifications, though established expressions also occur naturally in conversation.

Usage

It is used for halfway points in a journey or period, partially completed food and products, semi-formal or semi-official classifications, and attitudes or actions that combine two different qualities.

Caution

For an ordinary half of a quantity or period, ครึ่ง is normally used: “half an hour” is ครึ่งชั่วโมง, and “eat half” is กินครึ่งหนึ่ง. กึ่ง is mainly used in compounds and for intermediate or partly shared qualities.
